Scout Post 2015

Local residents can use Scout Post to have cards delivered to addresses in Broomley, Hedley, Mickley and Stocksfield (with a NE43 postcode). Cards should be placed into the special Scout Postboxes located in the two Post Offices in Stocksfield and we ask for a minimum donation of 20p per card. Collections start on the 1st of December. The last day for posting is Friday, December 18 at 12 noon.

The cards are delivered by members of the Scout Group. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts can collect their allotted cards from Philippa’s house (25 Cade Hill Road) between 3pm and 6pm each Friday, or 9am to 12 noon on Saturday.

Remembrance Sunday

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders will be joining in the annual Remembrance Sunday celebration on November the 8th, marching in uniform from Stocksfield Station to the War Memorial. Parents are very welcome too! Please wear poppies if you have them.

We will meet in the Railway Station Car Park at 10.30 am, dressed ready to walk to the memorial. We should be back at the car park by about 11.30 am, with refreshments served afterwards at the community centre (SICA).

Amazon Row

Not content with rowing across the Atlantic, ex-Scout Stephen Harpin is now planning to row the navigable length of the Amazon River – a total distance of 3,342 km (2,077 miles) – from Nauta in Peru to Macapá in Brazil. Part of a five person crew, their boat “the Bishop” leaves in November and they hope to complete the journey in approximately 30 days.

The team will face very challenging conditions: intense sun, heat and very high levels of humidity. Each day they’ll have to ensure they can find clean drinking water to avoid dehydration and debilitating sickness. On the water they’ll have to dodge fallen trees and the enormous river barge convoys – day and night. Navigating the remote upper reaches of the Peruvian Amazon, the dense forests of Colombia, and the busy shipping lanes of Brazil will demand immense stamina, a very high degree of committed training and above all strength of mind and teamwork.

Each member of the team is raising funds for charities that matter to them. We are delighted that once again Stephen has chosen to support the 1st Stocksfield Scouts. If you want to support his efforts please use the following link:

Keep Stocksfield Tidy

Our Beavers have been learning about hygiene and putting their artistic skills to good use – running their first media campaign! Their posters will be going up outside the hut today!

2015 Group AGM

The Annual General Meeting will be held at the Scout Hut in Guessburn on Wednesday the 21st October, 7.00 – 8.00 pm.

All parents are warmly invited to attend the Group AGM – it will be a very quiet meeting if you don’t!
Badges will be awarded to Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

This is your chance to talk with the new leaders, find out what’s happening about the hut, meet the man who removed the bees and more!

Bee Prepared

The roof may be leaking in places, but the hut was still providing shelter to a colony of wild bees, who were building their combs in a gap between the outer and inner walls. They were safely removed this weekend by parent and Honorary Treasurer Ben Mitchell, who has re-homed them in one of his hives. I am glad to say that neither Ben or the bees came to a sticky end!

Cub Camp Questions

If your Cub is going to camp, John is holding a meeting about it at the Scout Hut at 1pm on Saturday the 22nd of August.
He will be going through the programme, discussing meals, medicine, first aid, home sickness, friendship groups and pocket money.

You don’t have to attend but if your cub has not been away with us before the more we know about their like and dislikes the better we can care for them.

If your cub has any concerns about going and you can’t attend please let John know so we can make the best plan for your cub so they get the most enjoyment out of this camp.

A walk in the park

The Beaver Colony managed to pick a dry evening for their annual walk on the final meeting of this Scouting year. It was a sponsored walk, raising money for the new hut.

At the end the Beavers said farewell and thank you to their leader Carole, who is retiring this summer. Happily Matthew has volunteered to take over the Colony.

The High Life

Stocksfield Scouts spent this afternoon in the trees (with a few keen/brave parents) enjoying the ‘Go Ape’ high ropes course at Matfen. Thanks to ADC (Scouts) Alan Chapman for organising this District Scouting event.

Flying the Flag for Stocksfield

This weekend we have two patrols competing in the District “Back to Basics” camping competition. This year’s event has a farming theme, so our patrols have adopted agricultural names: the Muck Spreaders and the Midden.
